Liberal Democrat Election Triumph in Sheffield

Liberal Democrats have swept to victory in this year’s local elections in Sheffield, gaining six new seats and overall majority of the city council.

After a hard-fought campaign, the Lib Dem team seized four Labour seats, one from an Independent councillor and unseated the last Conservative councillor in Sheffield.

Commenting on the achievement, local Sheffield MP and Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg said,

"This is an outstanding result for Sheffield Liberal Democrats.

"Labour's stranglehold on the North has been well and truly broken. Meanwhile, David Cameron's Tories have failed to make inroads, losing their only Sheffield seat.

"As a Sheffield MP I am especially proud that we will now be able to offer local people a real say in the way our great city is run. Labour took the people of Sheffield for granted for far too long.

"With gains in the North and the South against Labour and the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats are showing renewed momentum across the country."
