Local MP votes to save maintenance grants for students

Nick Clegg voted against the Government proposal to scrap maintenance grants for students and replace them with additional loans.

Nick Clegg, MP for Sheffield Hallam said

'Increased maintenance grants were a key protection for poorer students sought by the Liberal Democrats when tuition fees were raised during Coalition and have meant more students from disadvantaged backgrounds have gone to university than ever before.

'What discourages young people most about going to university are the upfront living costs and maintenance grants are designed to ease that pressure, so to scrap them now is wrong and a blow to social mobility.’
