As someone who believes Britain is stronger, richer and safer as part of the European Union I am bitterly disappointed that we voted to leave the EU little over a week ago.
What is more heart breaking is that the economic warnings that were made during the campaign have started to come true so quickly. The pound has dropped through the floor, the country’s credit rating has been downgraded, billions have been wiped off the value of British companies and many are cancelling planned investment, with jobs no doubt to follow suit.
No one has yet presented anything close to a coherent plan for what we do next and European leaders have made clear they are in no mind to sit around and wait.
Chaos. Uncertainty. No one willing to take responsibility. The country poorer than it was just a few days ago. The Conservatives and Labour are letting the country down.
The Liberal Democrats, of course, respect the outcome of the referendum. The people have spoken and we must accept their verdict. But that does not mean that we will stop fighting for what we believe in. 49% of Sheffielders voted to remain, as did 48% of the UK, and you deserve to have your views listened to and respected. In all this chaos, the Liberal Democrats are determined to do just that.
We believe Britain is better off when it is leading in Europe and we will continue to make that case. We believe that Britain is at its best when it is open-minded, open-hearted and outward-looking. That’s why so many people have flocked to join us since the referendum result was announced – more than 10,000 new members at the time of writing, around one a second since the 24th. If you believe Britain is at its best when it is generous, tolerant and engaged with our neighbours and allies, come and join us.
